Even if you are the neatest person you know, if you try to put too many things into a small closet, it will be next to impossible to keep it organized.
If your closet is simply not big enough for your belongings and a closet remodel is out of the question, you must reduce the amount of things you store in the closet before it can be kept organized. It is a tough one to swallow for many; but the trade-off is well worth it.

The first step is to remove anything in your closet that doesn't belong there. Locate a more appropriate home for items that mysteriously found their way into the space. If you can't think of a more suitable place for an item, ask yourself if you really need it. Perhaps it is time to donate the item or put it in long term storage elsewhere.
The absolute best way to clean out any closet is to remove everything in it all at once. Vacuum, sweep, dust, and wash down shelving and racks - start with a clean slate.
One-by-one, go through each item and place in one of four piles:
-Keep
-Donate
-Throw away
-Move to another location
Carry away all piles except the keep pile. Take a look at what you have left. Do you still have too much stuff? If so, take a glance back at the closet itself.
Is there anything you can do in there to increase your storage space? Consider an inexpensive second hanging bar to double your hanging space. How about hooks, do you have any (enough)? Can additional shelving be added? Before moving anything back into your closet, take the time to install these extras.
You've now made the most of the closet you do have. Your goal moving forward is to remember why you did this exercise to begin with. Make sure to monitor your purchases from here on out. Whenever you do bring something new home to store in your closet, be sure to remove something else to free up the necessary space.
Being realistic about what you can store in your closet is the easiest way to keep you closet neat and organized, just as you like it.
